Day 37 Plymouth to Wonwell Beach
I had a good sleep in my ‘office block’ budget hotel.
I caught the first ferry across from the Barbican to Mountbatten at 08:15.
As you can see, it was another absolutely gloriously sunny day! No sooner had I arrived at Mountbatten Point, than I stopped to slap on the sun cream.I quickly made my way up the hill, where I had a good view of Plymouth.
The path then took me round Jennycliff Bay, with lovely views back towards Mount Edgcumbe. After various wooded areas and holiday chalet parks, I reached a point that overlooked Plymouth Sound Breakwater. Today was one of those calm days when it was not required! Eventually I reached a view of Great Mew Stone! After that, it was a walk into Wembury. There wasn’t much to see, apart from dozens of disappointed Japanese tourists, looking for the football stadium😜After Wembury there was a nice walk down to the shoreline of the river Yelm, where I caught a ferry across to Noss Mayo.
Luckily, it didn’t capsize with my heavy pack on the front!I took a slight detour from the path to the Ship Inn, in order to get a meal, as it would be my only chance today! Needless to say, I bumped into Steve & Anna at the pub!
After lunch, the path was initially very nice as we walked along an old carriage drive. There were lots of nice views of the Yealm river.
It was headland walking all along to Stoke Point, which was quite pleasant and meant that I was able to make a bit of progress. Eventually I made it to Mothecombe where I had to wade across the river Erme. Luckily I timed it right and the tide was so low, it only reached half way up my calf’s.
I’m writing this from the beach opposite. Anna & Steve are also here and we will try and wild camp either on the beach or nearby!
I have walked about 19 miles today. My feet are tired and I’m a little de-hydrated but ok.
