Day 46 Beer to Lyme Regis ( and a bit).
Another day done on the coast path and another milestone achieved!
After imbibing one or two beer’s in Beer, I had a good sleep. I left the campsite at about 8:30 and headed down into the village. It was looking quite pretty in the early morning sun!
The views from the other side of the bay were quite spectacular!
There then followed a stiff ascent and descent to Seaton. This was the nicest view of the town. It was nice from afar, but close up, far from nice! I did stop for a quick coffee and bought a sandwich for my lunch, though! After Seaton, there was quite a long climb out of the town towards the start of the ‘Undercliffs’. If you don’t know, the undercliff is an area approx 5 miles long that was created during a series of land slips, especially in 1839 when a huge chunk of land broke away and slid towards the sea. Since approx 1900, the land has been abandoned by man, due to its instability, resulting in nature taking over. It is a bit of a ‘jungle’ and very overgrown. The whole area is now a National Nature Reserve.
Initially it was quite interesting looking out for the flora and fauna. However, quite quickly the results of yesterday’s rain made themselves known, with the path quite muddy in places, but even worse the flint rocks like marbles in the damp conditions.
I fell on my backside once and had three or four other “Bambi on Ice” moments. That made the going quite tough and meant I had to concentrate on where I was putting my feet and not look at my surroundings!
However, every now and then, you did get a view worth stopping for. This one looked down on Charton Bay.The also occasionally got to see the cliff, from where the land slip had occurred, which was equally impressive. After a while, the trudging through the damp woodland began to get monotonous and I was glad when I finally broke through into ‘daylight’ again! I then dropped down into Lyme Regis and in the process, crossed the county boundary into Dorset. So “goodbye Devon, hello Dorset!”I stopped for a drink with Steve & Anna then made my way out of town up the hill to Penn Cross, where I am camping tonight.
In total, I have walked about 12 miles today. I’m now in my last county before I finish this great expedition!
