Zennor to Lands End
What can I say, other than it’s been a day of contrasting styles?
I had a good sleep in my B&B and a vegetarian breakfast. I was out on the path by 7:20.
When I say I had a good sleep, most of me did. My Achilles must have had a bad night because it awoke quite grizzly. I don’t think yesterday’s boulder scrambling agreed with it. It was a good job there was no more of that today. If only…
Pretty much the whole path from Treen to Pendeen was rocky and extremely challenging. If I’m honest, I was absolutely fed up of it and seriously considering whether I could continue. My Achilles was getting more and more Miami. It just seemed never-ending.
Having said that, you did get the occasional view to admire!
The path beyond the lighthouse gradually began to improve into a less arduous one. It took me through the old Lelant mine ruins, which were quite interesting.
It was then on to Cape Cornwall, which for a long time was believed to be the western most point.
Soon after passing that, the sun finally decided to come out properly and the path began to even out in some nice cliff top walking.
Eventually, Sennen Cove came into view.
The only problem was, we were back to boulder scrambling in order to reach the village. My Achilles had just stopped complaining from this morning’s exertions and now started grumbling again. I was also getting hungry, as there had been nowhere to purchase any sort of refreshments along the path. By the time I got into Sennen Cove, I was gasping.A couple of pints of larger sorted the thirst, but the pub wasn’t serving food at that time. I decided to plough on to Lands End.
It was still quite busy at 5:30, with a queue of people taking it in turns to have their photo next to the iconic sign.
Some kind person duly obliged when it came to my turn. I had an ice cream, but every other food outlet was shut.I then walked up the hill to Trevescan to a campsite, where I pitched my tent in the stiff breeze.
I have now walked up to the First/Last Inn in Sennen village, only to find that their kitchen is closed tonight. Having already walked 19 miles today, I really can’t be bothered to walk back down into Sennen Cove to get food. I will have to have a freeze dried meal in my tent later!
So in conclusion, I am actually quite chuffed to have walked the whole of the north Devon and North Cornwall coast to Lands End. Unfortunately, although it’s a significant milestone, it’s not even half way on my journey. I need to get past The Lizard before I reach that milestone!
Tomorrow I will walk to Porthcurno and decide where to stay after that!
