Day 38 Wonwell Beach to Bolberry
I slept quite well in our wild camp on the beach, but it did get a bit chilly in the early morning. Turns out sand is not a great storer of heat!
I left the beach about 7:45 and headed towards Gara Point. It was another sunny start to the day, but with a bit of cloud cover as well.
The initial walk to Bigbury was quite tough, as it involved 3 or 4 steep ascents/descents. As per usual, the pay off was some stunning views!
After about 90 minutes, I made it to Bigbury where I stopped and had a coffee and sausage & egg sandwich ( disgusting) at Challaborough Cafe.
I then walked to Bigbury beach, where there were lovely views to Burgh Island. The tide was out so I could have walked across the causeway, but the pub was not yet open, so there seemed little point!
After Bigbury, I then had a steep ascent and descent to the River Avon, where I had to summon the Ferryman by ringing a handbell!
After that, the going got considerably easier, with a gentle walk around the Thurlestone Golf Course and hotel complex. There were a couple of nice beaches. That led me to Hope Cove. Firstly, I had to negotiate Outer Hope, which apparently hosts the annual conference of the international association of pessimists😜
I stopped off at the Hope & Anchor Inn for a bite to eat and a pint or two (purely for re-hydration).
After a relaxing couple of hours, I then walked around the headland of Bolt Tail before heading to the campsite ( Karageen) in Bolberry.
Whilst it is a nice campsite, I can’t recommend it to backpackers. Firstly, it’s £18 a night for a single person. Then you have to pay fo showers. There is no phone signal, but on site Wi-Fi costs £5 for 24 hours.
Today, I only walked 13 miles, but after yesterdays long day, I thought I’d take it easy!
