Day 19 Rest Day in Perranporth
After the lovely sunny weather of the last week or so, Mother Nature got her own back last night. I fell asleep at about 10:45pm despite all the chattering of my fellow campers. However, I was awoken at 1:30am to the sound of raindrops on the fly sheet. These got steadily heavier and louder, making it nigh on impossible to ignore. I lay there trying to nod off, but of course, I then needed a pee!
One of the essential ‘excess baggage’ items that I carry, is a collapsible ‘pee tube’ for just such an occasion. It saved me from having to get togged up in my waterproofs just to go to the toilet block. However, for future reference, it’s best only to use it once, before emptying. Don’t do as I did a couple of hours later and try using it again. As I said it is collapsible and I hadn’t fully extended it earlier, so in order to fit another wee into it, I had to extend it more. Not a good idea, because as I did so, the top popped open and I ended up spraying the inside of my tent with piss, like the winners of a Grand-Prix celebrating their win😂😂😂
Apologies to my fellow campers who probably heard a few expletives in their slumber!
The rain continued until about 7:45. Thankfully, we didn’t get any of the thunder and lightning that was forecast. I got up made a brew and then wandered down into Perranporth.
What a difference a day makes. Walking into town off the beach yesterday, I had to step over all the prostrate beach goers!
Not so today!I’ve had a leisurely day. I spent an hour or so reading a paper in a cafe, then wandered about the shops of Perranporth looking at the usual tourist tat!
I even managed to post a bit more stuff back home (0.8kg worth). In fact, that reminds me of the kindness of complete strangers that I have met during my walk. Whilst processing my parcel, I was explaining what I have been doing to the post office cashier. She took my parcel from me, applied the labels etc, then said “Can you wait a minute”. She disappeared out the back and returned with £5 from her own purse to put towards my MIND collection. I was bowled over, because I never expected that after such a brief conversation. Thank you dear lady, you made my day!
By this afternoon, I had seen all that Perranporth has to offer and was bored. I’ve had a short leg stretcher walk and now I’m sat in a pub (where else) typing this and nicking a bit more electric😳
I’ve already got twitchy feet ready to get back on the path. Tomorrow I will walk to Portreath and then work out where to stay.
