Day 18 Trevarrian to Perranporth
Firstly, let me apologise. Todays blog will be a bit mundane because the battery on my phone died half way round (I’d left the camera on). So the normal video showing my route only shows half of where I went and I have very few photo’s to show you!
Anyway, I left my impromptu pitch at 0730 and headed straight back to the coast path. It was another gloriously sunny day, with hardly a cloud in the sky.
I am developing some rather funny tan lines!
There were a couple of stiffish climbs between Trevarrian and Porth. I don’t know if there was an official’park run’ but quite a few joggers came back and forth.
I soon reached the outskirts of Newquay.
I decided to try and buy a few things and my original intention was to post a few things home, that I no longer want to carry around. After searching for the Post Office, I then remembered that it was a bl**dy bank holiday and the post office was shut! Then, I couldn’t find what I wanted (re-hydration tablets) in any of the Supermarkets or Chemists, so got increasingly hot under the non-existent collar!I checked the tide times, because I knew I had to cross the River Gannel and depending upon how high the tide was, would dictate which way I went.
Needless to say, I got it wrong and went on a 1.5 mile inland diversion, through head high grasses and brambles, which turned out to have been unnecessary, because by the time I reached the river crossing ( where there is a boardwalk) it was well clear of the water.
So a bit more effin and jeffin may have been heard in the vicinity!
I soon reached Crantock Beach, which was very crowded with holiday makers!
It was somewhere around this point my phone died.I thought I was being clever by diverting inland slightly to avoid the crowds, but ended up walking in totally the wrong direction towards Cubert and rather than reducing mileage, probably increased it. It took a while to get back on the path around Holywell.
I then negotiated the fairly steep climb up to Penhale Point and around the Army ranges, before dropping down steeply onto Perran Bay.
It is a vast beach, with hardly a sole on it, but my goodness, it seemed never-ending walking the length of it. By the time I reached Perranporth I was absolutely knackered.
I dived into the first available bar, had a refreshing pint and scrounged a bit of charge for my phone. I managed to find a campsite on the edge of the town that could accommodate me. By the time I’d walked the 0.7 mile to the site, I’d made the decision to have tomorrow off. The forecast isn’t great and I need to give my muscles a rest!
By my calculations I’ve walked over 18 miles today, but probably only about 14 of them official ‘coast’ miles!
