Day 17 Trevone to Trevarrian
On tonight’s issue of Baywatch…..
I stayed in the pub B&B last night, which had the softest springiest bed I’ve ever had the displeasure to try and sleep in. It was like being on a water bed! Needless to say, it wasn’t the best night’s sleep!
I was late starting my walk, because when I went down for breakfast at 8:00, the place was like the Mari-Celeste. Not only could I not find any staff, there were no clues as to where I was supposed to get breakfast!
I went back to my room packed up and made as much noise as possible. By 8:45 I decided if I couldn’t find anyone, then I would just leave, without paying the bill. Just as I was about to do so, a lady appeared and took my breakfast order. I asked where I should go and was shown to an area with some tables and a load of old beer barrels stacked up!
The breakfast was actually very good and the staff were very pleasant, but there were so many rough edges to the place that I couldn’t recommend it!
I got back onto the path at 09:30 and headed to Harlyn Bay, which wasn’t much to look at!
I walked around to Trevose Head, where there was a swanky new lifeboat station.
After rounding the headland, it was a stroll down to Booby’s Bay, which was equally as dull! After that, the path thinned out a bit. This part of the coast path has very little phone reception ( certainly not for O2). However, my OS Map on my phone showed that there was a pub at Porthcothan. When I got to the bay, I found out to my horror that the pub was up a steep hill. Not to worry, because the extra exertion just wetted my thirst even more. When I got to the top of the hill, you can imagine my disappointment when it turned out the pub didn’t exist anymore! I had a minor hissy fit and begrudgingly walked back down the hill into the heart of the village, where there was supposed to be a shop.
I thought I remained quite calm, considering to my horror there was a queue of people at least 60m long, waiting to go to the shop! Needless to say, I didn’t bother joining them and continued on, grumbling under my breath at all the effin tourists!!!
I stopped at the top of the next hill and had a sit on a bench for half an hour to calm down and eat a cereal bar.
There was then a nice walk along the headlands past a few more beaches.
After that, an Oasis appeared on top of a hill at Carnewas Point, where there was a small cafe. I was able to have a nice mug of tea and my first ‘cream tea’ of the walk so far. Needless to say, I didn’t want to create a diplomatic incident, so put the jam on first! I now felt fully refreshed and continued walking to Trennance, where I did find a pub! The only trouble was, I still couldn’t find a phone signal to arrange a campsite.Instead I decided to chance my luck and walked up the steep hill to Trevarrian where there is a large campsite. Initially I was told they were fully booked, but I used my best puppy dog eyes and the chap agreed to let me pitch my tent on a spare bit of ground far away from all the other campers! The only downside, is it appears to be at the end of the runway to Newquay Airport!!!!
It’s been another fairly easy days walking today and I have covered just under 15 miles.
Tomorrow I will go to Newquay, do some admin then see how far I get the other side!
