Day 4 Watermouth Bay to Woolacombe

As I expected, I had a better night’s sleep. For some reason, you always do on the third night.

I took my time packing up, partly because I wanted to have a ‘lie in’ but mostly because I’d left my phone on charge overnight in a common room, which was locked up until 9am.

I left the site just before 10 and made my way around Watermouth Bay.

I stupidly thought it would be a simple stroll to Ilfracombe. Oh no! We were made to drop down to sea level at Hele Bay, then have a near vertical climb up to Fort Hilsborough ( 120m or 400ft ) then back down to sea level in Ilfracombe.

I had a quick coffee, cake and refreshing lager on the harbour side before heading over to the iconic Damien Hirst Statue’Verity’, which is the UK’s tallest statue at 20 metres. It’s supposed to represent truth and justice. I think it should have been called Very Titty 😜

I then did a bit of shopping to replace my sunglasses that I broke on the second day and also to post some excess baggage back home ( over 1.1kg ) so hopefully I’ll notice my pack feeling a bit lighter.

After leaving Ilfracombe ( or ill-frac-um-be as I prefer to call it!) it was another sharp ascent  up Seven Hills, during which I got my first soaking of the path in a sharp shower, before heading to Lee Bay

I continued on, but the hills came thick and fast and I had to stop at Damagehue for a pasty I bought earlier!
Just for a change, there were a few more savage climbs before I reached Bull Point Lighthouse.
After that, there lots more undulations until I reached Morte Point, where all of a sudden I headed south for the first time!

I could see the finishing line of Woolacombe in the distance, but obviously there were a few more hills to climb first.

I was quite surprised at how more up market parts of Woolacombe have become. There was definitely lots of ‘London’ money in evidence. However just balance things out, I am writing this blog in an on-site bar at Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park, where 3 chubby girls are currently murdering some all time classics, in a so-called cabaret😂

I have  walked another 14 miles (21km) today with another 3000ft (910m) of climbing.

The good news is that for the next couple of days there is very little climbing involved.

I will walk to Braunton tomorrow.
